he had a ‘troubled history’ with the authorities. he challenged the oppressive structures set in place. he subverted society’s distaste for people who were different, for people who were ‘sinners.’
the authorities didn’t approve of anyone who challenged their power. they arrested him with unnecessary force and brutality. they beat him, and beat him, and bloodied his head with thorns. and they shamed him, and they mocked him. and then they handed him over to the state, and the state executed him, and he was dead.never tell me that God is not on the side of those who suffer, of those who are treated with violence and told they deserve it. God has experienced police brutality. God has experienced unfair trials and execution. God has experienced the very worst of injustice, and God is present with all those today living under the weight of oppression, terror, and trauma.
God is beside us when there is no light or warmth or peace to be found.
Emmanuel. God is with us.
