Friendly Reminder
Gypsy is a slur
Eskimo is a slur
Lapplander is a slur
Instead of gypsy say Romani/Roma
Instead of Eskimo say Inuit
Instead of Lapplander say Saami
A lot of people don’t know that these words are slurs, so now that you know, avoid using them!
(add any other words that a lot of people use and don’t realize that they are slurs! I didn’t even know lapplander was a slur!)
Edit: Thanks for informing me that Eskimo is a slur when used towards Natives in Canada/Greenland and not Alaska!
Respectful language is so, so important.
Also, saying you have a spirit animal when you are not apart of the indigenous community is offensive to them
The more you know 🌈If you aren’t of Native descent, just say Patronus instead of spirit animal tbh. We all get it, and you’ll seem more “fun Harry Potter fan” than “culturally insensitive dickhole”
🙂
daemon is also a good option, if you’ve read the His Dark Materials series!
Or familiar, instead of spirit animal!
Also, don’t call Japanese people “Japs.” That’s actually a short name used towards them during the era when the Japanese were put in camps and were treated horribly. I didn’t know this until my Dad explained just why it was wrong. Zipperheads and Nips are two other words nobody has known to be a sensitive thing.
(If anyone has good evidence to any of these, I’d be glad to take them and add them into my response. Evidence is 👌 with this kind of stuff.)
